Of all the Las Águilas stories I’ve written, A Matter of DNA was one of the most ridiculously fun to research. I kept falling into genetics rabbit holes, asking medical professionals increasingly suspicious questions, and checking every tiny detail because once I started asking, “But scientifically… could this happen?” apparently I could no longer stop.
At some point, I even started sitting in on Harvard geneticists’ lessons whenever they livestreamed on YouTube. Libre naman, so syempre pumasok ako. 😂 No enrollment. No tuition. No student ID. Just audacity, Wi-Fi, and a disturbingly specific fictional family problem.
By the end of it, feeling ko Harvard scholar na ako.
Please do not ask Harvard to confirm.
But beneath all that research, this became one of the stories I enjoyed writing most because its heart is actually very simple: Elias believes there must be an explanation for everything. Ella is the explanation that makes absolutely no sense.
It became a story about
